India made a powerful start to their three-match ODI series against West Indies, defeating the visitors by eight wickets in the first ODI. A brilliant century from Virat Kohli, another hundred from captain Shubman Gill, and an impressive spell from Kuldeep Yadav were the major highlights of India’s convincing performance.
West Indies Put Up a Competitive Total
After being asked to bat first, West Indies showed plenty of determination with the bat. John Campbell scored 62, providing a solid foundation at the top of the order.
The biggest contribution came from Justin Greaves, who played an excellent innings of 101 runs. His century helped West Indies recover from a few setbacks and finish their 50 overs on 295/7.
The Indian bowlers, however, managed to prevent the visitors from reaching an even bigger total. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav was particularly impressive, picking up four wickets for 40 runs in his 10 overs.
India’s Chase Gets Off to a Strong Start
Chasing 296, India needed a confident start, and their top order delivered. Captain Shubman Gill took responsibility at the crease and produced a magnificent 110-run innings.
Gill combined patience with aggressive strokeplay, putting pressure on the West Indies bowlers and keeping the required run rate under control.
Virat Kohli Turns Back the Clock
The biggest attraction of India’s chase was undoubtedly Virat Kohli.
Coming in after the early stages of the innings, Kohli produced another memorable ODI performance. He remained unbeaten on 139, guiding India through the chase with a combination of precise drives, powerful shots and excellent running between the wickets.
Kohli’s century was his 55th in ODI cricket and also took him beyond the landmark of 15,000 ODI runs, placing him alongside the greatest run-scorers in the history of the format.
India Complete a Comfortable Chase
With Gill and Kohli controlling the innings, India’s chase became increasingly comfortable. India reached 300/2 in 41.4 overs, winning the match by eight wickets with plenty of deliveries remaining.
The result gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Kuldeep Yadav Makes the Difference
While the batting performances dominated the headlines, Kuldeep Yadav’s contribution was equally important.
His four-wicket haul prevented West Indies from converting their promising start into a much larger total. His ability to create pressure through the middle overs proved crucial to India’s overall performance.
For his match-winning bowling effort, Kuldeep was named Player of the Match.
